We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

Your website sucks because I don't know how to embed stuff.

Yes. It must be somebody else's fault.

Looks like Spacey's still on his period!

It's good to have you here, Spacey.

I like the Sheepdogs song. I like Neil Young a lot, but I was never a big fan of that particular song.

Jubbers explained YouTube embedding in another thread, but there's no harm in going over it again.

If you go to the full editor, you'll see a "youtube" button. Click it. That will give you the BBCode you need. All you have to do from here is take the unique element from the YouTube video URL (it's the stuff that follows after the equals sign in the longer URLs, and it's the stuff that follows after "youtu.be/" in the shorter ones) and paste it between the opening and closing code tags.

An example:

Here's one of the video URLs you posted:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQyII5C3sYQ

Here's what you'll need to do to get it to embed:

Code: Select all

[youtube]uQyII5C3sYQ[/youtube]
Here's how it will look after you've embedded it:

It's meant to be sort of ironical. Neil Young has been banned by some Alberta radio station for going full-out against the tarsands development. And yet that song was written in response to being banned from performing in Iran back in the 80's, if memory serves.

Ironicalness all around.

I'm familiar with the song's tongue-in-cheekness, though I'd always heard his target was Bush I. Maybe he gave Canada one story and the US another.

It's the music, more so than the irony, that never struck a chord with me. Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." does something similar, but I like it more, musically. That said, on the whole, I tend to prefer Neil Young's music to Springsteen's.

Adam tends to prefer Springsteen's music to all other music. I think he's crazy, but I still love 'im.

I know very little about Springsteen's music outside of the stuff that still gets radio play (Born in the USA, Glory Days, Dancing in the Dark, etc.). What I've noticed about those songs, though, is that they're built on simple, repetitive, and in some cases bland synth melodies. Their lyrics may be a bit more appealing, but I somehow can't get past the music.

Sounds like most of the stuff you've heard was from his mid-eighties phase. I guess he was probably at his most popular then. I like some of it. Some of it I don't. I like "I'm on Fire."

In the early-to-mid-seventies, he was billed as "The Next Dylan." I've also seen the stuff from back then compared to Van Morrison. It has a pretty different feel to it.

The nineties stuff has a different feel to it, too. He'd entered into "elder statesman" status by then.

If you want to dive into Springsteenia, Adam would be the guy to steer you in the right direction more so than yours truly.

(I'm not sure what compelled me to use "more so" back-to-back on the same page. It's been months since the last time I wrote it.)

I like Glory Days because the lyrics are pretty goofy.

"I was walkin' in, he was WALKIN' OUT!
Wewentbackinsidesatdownhadafewdrinks, but all he kept talkin' about"

Also, the video with Stephen Van Zant going all uber weird as he prances around on the stage is pretty hilarious.

Y'all are ASSES. Moderately amusing asses. :D

Springsteen should be announcing a new tour tomorrow. Hopefully actually featuring some U.S. dates for the first time since 2012. It's been over a year. I'm getting the shakes.

Also, while the recorded stuff is all well and good, the seven concerts I've been to remain the closest I've ever had to a religious experience. So if you want to start anywhere with him, buy a ticket. Or I can link some stuff. That'd be cheaper.

Should I once again post my explanation of why I don't like going to concerts? I've thought of a couple of things to add to the text I wrote originally.

I don't think I ever saw it the first time around, Mal, so feel free.

And if you're ever so inclined, listen to any Springsteen album from the 70s, particularly Born to Run. Or maybe Darkness on the Edge of Town. He didn't discover synthesizers until ~1980.

Born to Run is solid stuff. If I were going to tell you to listen to any one album of his from the seventies, I'd say to listen to that one.

You might also check out Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. That's his first album. It'll give you a feel for his earliest stuff. Boss fans on the whole seem to like it less than they like his second album (The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle). That said, I'm not sure if you'll like the second album as much. A lot of it is jammy, and the tracks can be pretty long. If I remember correctly, you're not too keen on that.

Yeah, but everybody knows that the single greatest band in the history of the world were Queen. And so it shall remain that way until the end of time.
