It's been a long time since I've seen the last two seasons of the original show. In fact, I don't think I revisited them since I saw them on TV (I'm much more familiar with the first seven seasons). Point is, the show ran out of steam in the last couple of seasons. Of course, this was after Duchovny had left. I'm not sure if they'll be able to rekindle the old spirit. The second movie was a big disappointment to me, so if the new stuff is anything like that I don't think I'd be on board.

If it does happen, I also hope that Mulder isn't simply still working on the X-Files as an FBI agent. That would just be sad, somehow. He was already a bit of a pityful character at times, a man caught up in events that were far more complex than he understood, always searching for this truth that ended up just beyond his reach. What I'm saying is that I don't think I'd want him to be that same person after 20 years.

He won't be. He's been institutionalized for sex addiction since then, and Scully has opened up about her bisexual past.

I had heard two things: that a new movie was in the works, which I knew might take too long to put together; and that a full-on reboot was being considered. Didn't like the sound of that at all. But a series revival makes sense.

The sticking point for me is the fact that the sexual tension of the earlier seasons is essentially gone, or changed irrevocably, now that they've been a couple for a number of years(if they follow up on that). That will-they, won't they dynamic is missing.

One might say, that... 'ship has sailed. In a manner of speaking.

Good. That's some tiresome bullshit. On any show.

No-one mentioned the "ship" reference. The 90's are officially dead. :(

Maybe just having italics was too subtle for us. Maybe you should have also added an apostrophe before the s.

Yes! That's what was missing.

Bravo, Spacey! Now we're all on the same page. For the time being, at least. Once the thread hits twenty-six posts, we'll be on another page.

So, I agree with Mal that the final seasons were the weaker of the series, but there was a lot of good stuff there as well. I believe with the perspective of time and a fresh look, there is potential for some real storytelling here. I think the key will be reintroducing iconic characters and situations like the Gunmen and CSM in an intelligent way that does not seem forced or cliche.

I am worried about Mulder once again questioning his beliefs about extraterrestrials and the government's conspiracy to hide them, if that's truly what they are going for. They already covered that ground at the end of season five with Michael Kritchgau's appearance. But oh well, I've been known to shift back and forth with my own beliefs over the years.

I'm going to watch I Want To Believe tonight, if only for the sake of completion.

People seem to like to shit on IWTB, but I thought it was a pretty decent movie. An homage to the stand-alone episodes, much as the first film was to the alien mythology arc.

Mal and I saw that together in the theater. I didn't mind it, but I was a little puzzled as to why they'd bother to make it. It seemed almost like they were banking on fans feeling like it was enough just to see Mulder and Scully together again. I don't remember the Monster of the Week being anything engaging or of real consequence. To be honest, I don't even remember what the Monster of the Week was.

I remember it wasn't part of the major alien arc. If it had been, it probably would have played out something like this:

M: Look! A stone! I think maybe there's aliens under this stone!
S: I'm not sure you should turn over that stone.
M: Hey! It's me!
S: Well, be careful.
M turns over stone.
S: See anything?
M: No. But it looks like maybe there were aliens under this rock at one point. Oh, look! Another stone!

I remember being pretty bored sitting through IWtB. On the one hand, I was glad that they weren't pursuing the alien myth-arc anymore, but on the other hand, the story didn't revolve enough about paranormal phenomena. It felt more like a run-of-the-mill thriller than a movie set in the X-Files universe. Like Goiter said, it seemed like they were relying too much on the sole fact that the old crew was reunited for this gig.

I actually got the DVD of the movie for a birthday a while back, but I still haven't gotten myself to watch it. The DVD box might even still be shrink-wrapped.

Edit:

I went back and changed "Fox and Mulder" (whoops!) to "Mulder and Scully," and I made the sentence a little less cumbersome.

You're only that guy if you're a jerk about it. Whether or not you're a jerk about it, I don't mind being called on a mistake.
