The "Is This Racist?" Thread

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

It's also factually incorrect. Have you seen the wiring in Delhi?

Sure I have. I've seen it many times, thanks to my deep pockets and my carefree, globetrotting lifestyle.

It occurs to me that most of the people he lights it in front of are black. (It's something like 7 out of 9 in the first video and 6 out of 10 in the second.) Often, if there are also white people there, he will light it closer to the black person. He claims at the end of another video that he lit the one in the gas station in Indiana, just outside of Louisville, KY (where he claims to live). I'm guessing parts of the two videos were shot in Louisville (75% white, 22% black) and parts were shot in the smallish Indiana cities across the border like Jeffersonville (80% white, 13% black) and Clarksville (85% white, 6% black) and New Albany (86% white, 9% black).

Was it the case that he played the prank on a lot more white people than the video suggests but that he didn't include those videos for any number of reasons? (Bad lighting, lame reactions, poor focus, etc.) I dunno. Was he consciously targeting black people the majority of the time? Did he just find himself in black neighborhoods by chance? Was it the case that, while he wasn't targeting any specific neighborhoods, he was targeting bus stops, and black people make use of public transportation more often than white people in these cities? I don't have any of the answers to these questions.

Am I the racist for noticing that he was pulling the prank, more often than not, in front of black people? Maybe. Whatever the case, fake firework or no, it wasn't too bright for him to light a fuse in front of a gas pump.

I guess it's all about the implication (cue the "Always Sunny" reference).

Is it racist when people of other colors make similar statements? I would argue that it's not since they're usually acknowledging the accomplishments of their ethnic/race group that were achieved in the face of often great adversity.

I suppose that different groups of whites have had to overcome different types of adversity at one point or another, and they can be proud of that. However, I can guarantee that the adversity they faced was never exclusively related to the color of their skin, so making a statement like that doesn't carry nearly the same meaning as when a black person says, "I'm proud to be black" (however, a person with Irish ancestors might say, "I'm proud to be Irish," which would acknowledge the hardships of Irish immigrants in the 19th and early 20th century, and that wouldn't be offensive). Given the historical context of race relations in the US, and particularly in the South, there's no other way to interpret the statement you posted above as anything but racist. It's purely a spiteful reaction to a common statement within the black community.

Final verdict: Definitely racist.

Whatever the case, considering the high volume of shares, it appears a fair number of Crossville folk are not "scared of be called a racist."
