The Canadian Politics thread no-one will care about

So, as the title implies, this thread be all up on Canadian Politics, or however one would articulate such sentiments. Up here, in the cold, barren wasteland of former British North America... we are at the beginning of yet another federal election season, for some silly reason.

Our elections don't last nearly as long as yours, but at least they are less painful for all concerned.

Amazing how changing one little consonant in that last sentence could take you down a whole 'nother path entirely.

Anyway.... the choices this year are between the incumbent Stephen Harper, an oil-drenched corporatist who apparently thinks the Iraq War would have worked out if only it had included more Canadians; Justin Trudeau, heir to the centre-left dynasty established by daddy Pierre Trudeau, an elitist prig who thought Maoism was misunderstood; Thomas Mulcair, leader of the socialist NDP, a man who has taken many honourable, sensible positions, but who would surely lead us to financial ruin in the long run; and finally Elizabeth May of the Green Party--no chance of winning, but every chance of gaining lots of ground.

These days I usually vote Green. As much as for a protest vote as for their ecological focus. I do prefer it when the big guys know they have some competition. But that's me.

I'm sure Adam will pretend to care about it the same way he pretends to care about British politics.

Hey! That's not true, Goiter. I'm legitimately compelled by British politics. I follow Canada's in passing, but frankly they have too many elections for anybody to be able to keep up.

Poor Spacey. Not even Adam is willing to pretend to care about his country's politics.

Well, Spacey...

Even Scotia isn't feelin' it, I think. Trudeau may turn out to be yet another in a string of disappointing recent Liberal leaders.

Personally, I think Marc Garneau would have been a good choice. An astronaut Prime Minister? Je pense que oui.

Does Canada have a wildly nationalist streak anywhere? And do those pesky Frenchies still have a massive inferiority complex?

Yeah, well it's hard to sport wood with this lot. Trudeau is untested and is milking the hell out of daddy's legacy. Mulcair, like every NDP leader before him is appealing to special interests while neglecting the rest of the country. And Harper, ....is Harper. Sometimes I think our parliamentary system would benefit form a two term limit amendment. Our PM and his inner conclave have become so complacent with power, so drunk on influence that they have successfully isolated themselves from the rest of Canadian society. This I fear was intentional. Harper once said he intended to erase any trace of the Liberal dynasty and sure as shit he did it. He scrapped the gun registry, dismantled federal agencies and castrated the census. The census, wtf? He also marginalized the House of Commons and gagged Canadian media. Oh well. The one thing he didn't raze was the senate and I bet your ass he wishes that bitch was extinct now.

Anyway, I'm bitter like most voters and not just because of the current scandals or PMO interference. My personal experiences with politicians over the last number of years has clouded my faith and hope in the elected public service. But that story is for another thread.

How the hell do you guys even figure out whom to vote for? It's totally easy for U.S. voters. You have two choices. One of the people just happens to be against everything you happen to believe in, and the other person just happens to be for everything you happen to believe in. Takes all the guesswork out of it. The only real internal struggle you have is over whether or not to go out and actually vote.

I mean, like, do you actually have to read stuff and learn about the candidates' ideas and beliefs and shit? Sounds fuckin' boring.

It is implacably boring. In two languages.

Scotia, these conversations certainly were spicier ten years ago.

I feel most of what you are saying, though I think you are a little rough on Mulcair. I can't see myself voting Conservative again in the forseeable future, unless someone sensible like John Tory rises to the fore.

But whatever. You have options. Green will do well this year, I hope. It's not about votes, it's about sending a message.

I was a different man then. I was even moreso ten years earlier; and I expect I will be very different if we have a similar exchange a decade or so hence. It will be interesting to witness.

I was pretty much the same man a decade ago. I weighed less. That was the big difference.
