Fun Japanese Things

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

The latest Tommy Lee Jones commercial in Japan is kind of sweet (and naturally he has somewhat super powers).

I'm rewatching and rereading Dragonball (pre-Z), and remembering how much I like Toriyama's art. Like this frame, where Yamucha, super-nervous about girls, just got a surprise glimpse at Bulma's bare chest... nipple eyes. (He's saying as he drools, "There was one booby... there were two boobies....")

I recently thought of a series of commercials I watched with delight back in the early '00s for some kind of internet service by Panasonic. Originally, these were flash animations, but some of them have been uploaded to YouTube now. Here's one:

I think most of them started with the line "Ai no intaaneeetooo..." :P

One way Nintendo Japan's YouTube channel differs from it's American counterpart: The "Meow Meow! Cat Mario Time" show. Here's episode 81, which is just like all of their other presentations of the Switch and it's upcoming games (Zelda, Splatoon, 1-2-Switch, Mario Kart, etc), except that it has an overly excited kitty-version of Mario (with lots and lots of meows ending his sentences - nyan) and a kitty-version of Peach (whose main phrase seems to be uso janai! - No way!) talking in between the trailers. So many meows.

My Japanese-comprehension level is "Kitty-cat Mario'-level. I'm not sure if that's laudable or sad.

I am sure that I am pretty excited for the Switch, though.

Had a connection in Tokyo on my way back from Indonesia, so I got to experience the legendary Japanese toilet! I didn't avail myself of all the fun splashy accoutrements, but I did find the automatic waterfall sounds that played as soon as I sat down very inspiring.

:D

The main reason that Japanese toilets have audio accompaniment is to save water. Japanese women, embarrassed by the sounds of normal human bathrooming, would keep flushing the toilet over and over again to mask their own noises. Originally, fancy toilet stalls would have a sound box that you could press the button on to make flushing sounds without actually wasting the water.

Speaking of toilets, I just learned of the existence of this series of children's books: おしりたんてい, or Detective Butt. It's about a detective (a la Sherlock Holmes), but his head is a butt.

So I was watching a documentary that claimed that 1/3rd of Japanese guys are single! There was some very disturbing things in that show.

"BBC Three reporter, Stacey Dooley, has been held by police in Tokyo while filming child sexual exploitation"

A bit of a click-bait title, no?

Also new this week, this commercial for the game NieR:Automata. Really disturbed me, made Goiter laugh out loud.
