Fun Japanese Things

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

I shared this with Scarlet on Facebook - Softbank (cell phone company)'s mascot is a whita shiba, who has a black human son and an illegitimate Japanese daughter. Also, Tommy Lee Jones is apparently an alien studying humans.

Here's a commercial I saw tonight for FANCL's "Adult Calorie Limit."
Somewhat cruel wordplay. The announcer guy:

あれから二十五年
嘗ては乙女
今では太め

It's been twenty-five years.
once a young lady (乙女 - otome)
Now chubby (太め - futome)

If you guys get tired of the crazy Japanese stuff, just let me know. Here's why you are getting bombarded it with it: I just registered for the Japanese Language Proficiency Exam in December in Chicago (hey, Negs! We'll be in Chicago for 3-4 days in early December!) and I'm watching Japanese television everyday for listening practice.

Due to the time zone differences, I mostly only get to watch the variety talk shows meant for housewives (today's text-in survey was "How far would you go without any makeup on? 1 - anywhere; 2 - very quick errands/to the public baths; 3 - just to take the trash out or to the mailbox; 4 - would not leave the house at all.").

Very cool. I can score you free passes to Shedd, and can get you into the Field and the Art Institute, too.

I love this Japanese TV clip, which they used often on Colbert's old show:

I like the way they are laughing at South Koreans in that clip.

Fun fact: The online Kanji course I use, WaniKani, uses Hard Gay as a mnemonic for the sound "sei" since he says that a lot. The vast majority of the time when there is an update to the site, there is usually a line saying "replaced the link to the Hard Gay video again because the last one was removed from YouTube."

That's awesome. :D

By the way, I'm still surprised that he was allowed to use the Razor Ramon moniker. You'd think that the WWF/WWE would have stepped in at some point.

Tonight's Live Survey asked: "For what reason do you start going on a diet?"

Blue - in love
Red - someone said something
Green (the clear winner) - can't get into clothes
Yellow - no particular reason

This was followed by a recipe demonstration for very yummy-looking hamburger steak with thick brown gravy.

Today's bit of TV watching included a look behind-the-scenes of new and upcoming anime series and movies based on old anime, like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and the new Lupin III (Italiano) series:

They also played a sneak-peak of the ending theme song for the new Lupin III series, which I think sounds really cool. They had the singer, Sayuri Ishikawa (a very famous enka singer) on the show for a little bit, as well. Here's a clip of the song:

I like the update of the opening theme. The opening sequence has a distinct Cowboy Bebop vibe. ;)

That dude on the right looks like he could be the offspring of the Japanese Tommy Lee Jones and the Japanese Billy Wilder.

Have you come across any classic literal Japanese TV show and movie title translations yet? Like Adam's favourite movie being called "Many Race People Fight Fast Cars Seven Times" or the anxiously awaited "Space Knights Pew Pew With Robots" ?

I've only seen two American movie trailers so far. One is Ant Man, which has the same title as in English, though is pronounced more like "an-to man."

The other movie, though, is titled "カリフォルニア・ダウン" ("California Down"), which is quite different from its original title, San Andreas.

I looked up the two you mentioned, though:

Fast and Furious 7 is called "ワイルド・スピード SKY MISSION" ("Wild Speed Sky Mission") in Japanese.

The new Star Wars movie has basically the same title as it does in English: スター・ウォーズ/フォースの覚醒 ("Star Wars: The Force's Awakening")

Is the "Force's Awakening" part too complex to be expressed in katakana?

By the way, I put 覚醒 into Google Translate, and the first suggested translation it gave me was "Arousal."

It was cruel of Japanese Billy Wilder's parents to give him a name with so many Ls (and an R!).

It could be aroused. It could be a boy-force and it has, after all, just awakened!

"Aroused" puts the "ou" in "arsed"!

(I'd have written out "Oh, you!" but I figured it was more than I owe you.)
