New car shenanigans

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

New car shenanigans
Car is up for replacement. Got about £5k 'equity' locked away in it mostly due to super low mileage. Currently driving that KX-4 Kia Sportage SUV I got three years ago. Thinking of going for something sportier, possibly in a convertible/cabriolet. If I go down that route current choices are:
BMW Z4
Audi TT (coupe, not cabriolet)
Mercedes SLK
Any thoughts, preferences, cries of 'Don't buy a..XXXXX. Dalty!' ????

I don't live in an automotive dustbin, so have evolved beyond a Ford F-150.

Did you really expect a straight answer out of this bunch?

Re: New car shenanigans
These cars don't cost much less than the amount of money our family makes in a year. Is there really much of a chance that we'd have decent input?

Maybe Dalty is looking for feedback so he can play Oprah to the best ones. "You get a new car! You get a new car!"

We don't want anything that doesn't average fifty miles or more to the gallon in the city.

Re: New car shenanigans
I drive so little as I work in the City and commute over on the train. In 3 years I only put 10,500 miles on my Kia.
So this is for fun and weekends away.

Re: New car shenanigans
In that case, maybe you should consider leasing. Or even renting.

Re: New car shenanigans
Or even just keeping your pretty new Kia Sportage Sports Utility Vehicle. "Sport" is in the title twice. How could you possibly find anything sportier than that?

Re: New car shenanigans
This is kinda like a lease. Basically I carry the equity from car to car, trading it in every three years using the equity as a deposit. It works OK.
I have looked at leasing but the 6 months lease fee down up front usually puts me off. To be honest I haven't sat down with a calculator and done all the maths yet to see what's best for me. I am too Ipsy in matters of maths.

Brits are too good for just one math. They need all the maths.

This is correct. After we have done one mathematic, we do another mathematic. At the end of this, we say "Wow, that was some great mathematics!"

Re: New car shenanigans
Don't ditch on a car just because it has a few miles on it. Stick with it a while. Coast on those old payments and don't fool yourself into believing refinancing is the financially responsible thing to do. You gotta ride this thing out. Steer clear of this new-car-every-three-years mentality. You'll never stop paying for it if you don't switch gears.... and fast! Besides, I think having a reliable, familiar car with some miles on it can be a good thing to have in a clutch situation.

Re: New car shenanigans
Part of the problem is that you're on the other side of the pond, so I don't know what's available and the cost.
If you were here in the US, and based on the MSRP of the cars you listed, You could easily go for a Nissan 370Z, one of the american pony cars (Camaro/Mustang/Charger), a Cadillac ATS, or a BMW 2-series.

Re: New car shenanigans
The pony cars and the Cady are no good as we have corners over here and 70s engineering can't cope!
I drove a 370Z and it was exhausting compared to its peers. Needs work on the steering and the suspension guy at Nissan should be transferred to work in another department...... sweeping the factory maybe? Looked great though.
Trouble with the Beemer is that they are ubiquitous over here and with a 2 series you will always look like you really, really, really, really wanted a BMW but couldn't afford a better one.
As you can tell I am a bit of a nightmare when it comes to picking cars!!!!
I looked at a Porsche Boxter which seemed nice.

Re: New car shenanigans
You might want to rethink some of your Continental biases The new Caddy's are pretty much on par with the Germans in terms of handling and power. I seriously considered a CTS-V before I decided on my Corvette.
Beemers are also a dime a dozen here, especially in Dallas. The same thing is true of muscle cars, especially Mustangs. I pass one of those every 30 seconds it seems like.
The Z is a nice car, but I agree it's heavy and getting outdated. I had a brand-new one back in 09 when it first came out, and I would have gladly bought another if Nissan had released a new model, but they seem content to sit on the old car and just minorly update the cosmetics. I also considered a Jaguar F-Type but it was just a little too pricey for me (plus it's English and we all know the only thing they know about cars is how to make them leak oil)

Yeah - that F-Type is amazing but way out of my price range.
OK - I was being unfair..... I meant 90s technology!

Oh. I see. You actually care how strangers perceive you as you're driving past them. I'll have to rethink everything.Dalty wrote:Trouble with the Beemer is that they are ubiquitous over here and with a 2 series you will always look like you really, really, really, really wanted a BMW but couldn't afford a better one.

Re: New car shenanigans
"The X-type that isn't shit" could have a pro-Jaguar meaning or an anti-Jaguar meaning--in U.S. American English, at least. ("Ain't shit" is how we'd usually say it to convey the anti-Jaguar meaning, but "isn't shit" is an acceptable, less ain'tsy alternative. We'd probably say "shitty" instead of "shit" to convey the pro-Jaguar meaning. Well, we would have a decade ago. A lot of Britishisms have seeped into U.S. American speech in the last decade or two. Thanks to the Internet, probably.)
