We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

Star Wars: Commander

Just started playing this online on my iPad. Addictive and the resource gathering is long winded but it's fun.

Anyone else playing?

It's basically Clash Of Clans meets Command & Conquer set in the Star Wars universe. But like a lot of tablet games these days you need a lot of patience or the ca$h to make in-game purchases to progress. The ability to join squads and team up is pretty cool.

Before Star Wars: Force Commander was turned into a weird 3-D RTS game, it was presented at the 1998 E3 as a traditional, C&C-style RTS that you can see in those screenshots. The concept presented at E3 was later scrapped and completely redesigned into the game that would eventually be published in 2000.

I wonder if the original concept found its way onto tablets in the form of Star Wars: Commander. The title seems to hint at it, at least.

Had to look up "RTS." Felt dumb when I saw what it was.

I played some real-time and turn-based strategy games in the late nineties. (The Internet tells me the late nineties are part of what is considered the golden age of PC gaming. I had an inkling that this was the case, but I hadn't ever given it much thought.) I wasn't very good at them. I was in undergrad at the time, so I didn't spend that much time playing anything. I was browbeaten by my mother into leaving my NES and Genesis at home, so I wasn't even playing platformers all that often. I played Ms. Pac-Man on various cabinets about town. I logged more time playing Ms. Pac-Man as an undergrad than I logged playing anything else.

I considered buying a console and just not telling my family I had done it, but the consoles were all so fucking expensive. I had scholarships, a grant, and a job, but most of the money I made went toward food and gas. (This may be why, today, I feel such a strong urge to offer my free gas to the world.) I got the occasional used book and went to the matinee a good bit, so it's not like I suffered. The Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation were all $200 or $300 a pop, though, and the games for each were all in the neighborhood of fifty bucks. I couldn't swing it.

PC games were the only affordable option, though my PC was pretty shitty and did a lot of crashing. I probably played the same RTS and TBS games everyone played. I played some Master of Orion, Civilization II, Age of Empires, and Command & Conquer, though I didn't own any of them. They were loaners from friends. I really was pretty shitty at them. They made me anxious. The RTS games made me more anxious than the TBS games. The TBS games had more of a familiar, tabletop gaming-like feel to them.

The two games I played the most were neither RTS nor TBS games. One was the PC version of Dragon's Lair. Only ever beat the damned thing once. The other was Populous: The Beginning. That one was kind of fun. It felt somewhat RTS-like, though Wikipedia lists it as a "god game."

I am far better at RTS type games than I ever was at platformers, driving games or shoot 'em ups. Guess being anal and patient helps a little.

I'm pretty anal and patient. Didn't seem to matter much. I think being anal and patient lends itself to gaming in general. It certainly lends itself to platformer play. It just happened that I was kinda sucky at RTS games. I think a big part of it was how many balls the gamer was expected to juggle at once.

I was a pretty big fan of Age of Empires II (and its expansions). Played it, Warcraft III, and Rise of Nations (among others) with a group of guys pretty much every Friday night my last two years of high school and first couple of years of college.

I was aware that you played Age of Empires II. Didn't you try to get Brother of Jubbers the Younger to play it a while back? I'm pretty sure I only ever played the first one.

The one PC game I really wanted to play that I never got to play was Myst. A friend's roommate let me watch him play it this one time. I helped him solve a puzzle. Seemed fun.

Riven came out my first semester as an undergrad. I kept hoping the price of Myst would drop with Riven's release, but it continued to cost a lot. I don't know that my PC could have handled it, to be honest.

This resource plan on SW:C is set way too high. Think it's designed to make you resort to in-app purchases in exasperation. Still worth a play though and with patience you can crack on without spending anything.

I don't understand the appeal of most Free to Play games. Obviously, there's got to be some appeal to a particular game that draws people in, but when you get to a point that actually prevents you from playing the game you want to play (limited number of moves per day, or a game mechanic such as resource gathering that takes forever to complete unless you pay to speed up the process) you're basically playing the game in spite of itself. You're wading through all the crap in order to get at the enjoyable core experience. That's the part I don't understand. Why not play a game instead that's actually fun to play without any qualifying statements?

I bought X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter my second semester in college. I just remembered. I didn't have a joystick, so I couldn't play it. Joysticks were pricey. I eventually forgot that I even had it.

I bought a joystick about 8 years ago or so, when they were reasonably priced, just so I could replay Alliance (had originally played it on a friend's PC).

When we moved in October of 2014 my wife offered to throw the joystick away and I said, "Nooooooo!".

I have no clue where it, or that game, or our PC even is right now. I guess in a box in our house somewhere?

I thought about getting these games again. I remember playing Alliance and just being amazed at the graphics. Hard to imagine how cool it would be with 20yrs of advancement. Hell, I think I was playing it on an old x486 and a 13" monitor.
