Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Post by Dalty »

It's available for iPad now. £7.99 for the app.

I've never played it. Is it worth starting with it??

People seemed to like it. Never played it myself. However, it's by BioWare, the same company that developed Mass Effect, so that might serve as an indicator of the approach to RPGs that you will also find in this game.

I only played the first Mass Effect, but I liked it a lot. I don't know how the KotOR gameplay translates to a tablet, but I would imagine you'll get a good value for £7.99.

I watched hours of a KotOR playthrough on YouTube some years back. Seemed like a cool game.

It's a fine game. I'm not sure how it would feel to play on an iPad. Generally speaking, tablets are great but are very clunky for serious gaming. I'm just not very confident how well it would translate, and quite honestly it sounds like it would be kind of frustrating.

I agree with Hicks. I'm not a fan of porting console or PC RPGs to tablets, and most of the control schemes they come up with for tablets usually suck. Having said that, however, KotOR uses a real-time combat system that also allows the player to pause the action at any time in order to queue up their next move or survey the battlefield. This might mitigate the suckiness of the touchscreen-based controls somewhat.

I consider KotOR to be a masterpiece, and one of the best games ever made. It's also the only non-Episode product I consider on-par with the films themselves, because of the terrific storytelling and memorable characters -- not to mention the stunning revelation late in the game. That's how highly I regard this game.

Sounds very much like Mass Effect. You know, I had totally forgotten about KotOR until Dalty brought it up. Looks like it's only $9.99 on Steam - I think I'll put it on my wish list.

It is. It's a model BioWare has utilized with great success in most of their recent games, including Dragon Age: Inquisition. KotOR was really the predecessor to what BioWare achieved with Mass Effect (my all-time favorite modern RPG series).

For £7.99 I am über-tempted. But I am desperately trying to keep pace with the kids on Star Wars Commander and very behind on my TV shows!

Man, screw the wish list. I logged in to Steam this evening and saw that both KotOR and KotOR II are on sale for $2.99 each (until May 7). At that price, I can't afford not to buy them!

Ol' Beau Watkins can afford not to buy them. He may soon be making some money for editing a pastor's book of biblical fiction, though, so that could change.

Steam is the name of a particularly excellent lap-dancing bar in St Juliens, Malta.

So, I bought KotOR 1 and 2 back when they were on sale and started the first one about a week ago. I'm about 10 to 11 hours in and I'm still on Taris. That's not a complaint, but it shows that there's just a lot of stuff to do. Feels a lot like the early part of Mass Effect when Shepard and his crew are at the Citadel (I must have spent a good 10 to 15 hours on that place as well).

The game definitely feels like a prototype of ME. A lot of stuff in KotOR seems to have been streamlined or simplified later for ME, for better or worse. The tabletop RPG elements are definitely more prominent in KotOR, but I can see how it might not be all that appealing for a broader audience to be knee-deep in various character stats, skills, and feats.

Still tempted by the iOS version of this game. Never played a MMORPG for any time before. Maybe this busts my cherry.
