It's Not Alabama This Time, Ladies and Gentlemen!

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

I didn't mean he was right to carry pigs to the slaughter. I meant he was right to question what was in the water. If you poison the pigs, you could poison the consumers of the pigs. Some of those consumers could be right rat bastards who had a poisonin' comin' to 'em, sure, but some of 'em could be three-year-old kids. And poisonin' three-year-old kids ain't quite right, either.Space Tycoon wrote:Calling it your job don't make it right.

I know a little bit about her organization. I was thinking about donating to it. Ain't nobody poisinin' nobody.
It was a publicity stunt, sure. That's how this works. People are now talking about this stuff. Naturally, most of the chatter is negative. They don't call Toronto "Hogtown" for nothing.

Isn't that the same argument people make when they go on about how countries shouldn't be letting in refugees?

He doesn't know. But surely he knows the fate in store for the enslaved beings he is transporting.

The arguments for limiting or not letting in refugees range from reasonable and understandable to outright racist. They are based on human facts and human realities.

But what about the fates of the consumers of the enslaved beings he is transporting? He already has the deaths of the enslaved beings on his hands. Should he risk having the deaths of the consumers of the enslaved beings on his hands?Space Tycoon wrote:He doesn't know. They take their own lives in their hands every time they put processed animal meat products onto their bodies. He knows what he's doing. Surely.

If he were carrying edible plants and a woman ran up to his car and started spraying said edible plants because she claimed they looked wilty, should he have let her? If she had sprayed the edible plants with poison and the poisoned edible plants had gone on to poison consumers, would it be the fault of the consumers?Space Tycoon wrote:They take their own lives in their hands every time they put processed animal meat products onto their bodies. When people get E. coli from grocery store spinach, should we hold them accountable? Can we argue successfully that they knew the risks involved?
Come to think of it, is the woman certain the pigs are thirsty? Isn't it a little presumptive to approach them and push water on them? They're already in a stressful enough situation as it is. Can she be sure she's not stressing them out even more? I hope she can be sure of this. Causing them added stress on their way to the chopping block seems excessively cruel.

Re: It's Not Alabama This Time, Ladies and Gentlemen!
I should add that E. coli is an equal opportunity bacteria. It doesn't give a shit about whether the spinach is genetically modified or all-natural. (Something else gave the shit. The E. coli just took a ride.) There's risk regardless of the spinach you choose when you buy spinach from the grocery store. Maybe the onus should be on all of us to grow our own spinach, rinse it thoroughly, blast-freeze it, and cook it. If you live in the city and can't afford a little garden plot to grow your spinach, that probably just means you haven't been working hard enough or managing your finances properly.

It's an absurd conparison. Spinach is not a self aware, conscious entity.

Still, that's not the issue I was addressing. I never took a side on whether or not it's right to kill pigs for food, and I never defended or condemned the man's choice to work in his specific field.
My focus has been on the transportation of a human food source. Pigs are a human food source. Spinach is a human food source. The comparison is not absurd. The string of questions I asked in the 1:25 am post are all built around this focus. You didn't address any of these questions.
I admit that the questions may have appeared rhetorical at first blush. They weren't meant to appear this way.

We know for a fact pigs and other farm animals possess the same level of consciousness as those we commonly think of as pets. The degree to which plants possess similar capabilities is still an emerging field of study. A worthy one, at that, but I don't like the way it is often misused to cloud the issue of factory farming specifically or mankind's mistreatment of animals generally.
Is the driver justified in being angry with the activist? From an abstract point of view, I guess so. See, his job is to drive a truck, it is not to think deeply about the ethical and moral implications of his cargo. It might as well be spinach or firewood or cocaine for that matter. He is not really the villain of the piece, more of a cog in a system that is very powerful and apparently unstoppable. Which is why direct action is sometimes necessary.

And obviously there are forms of direct action that are totally unacceptable and counter-productive.

Whether or not you'd be up for being pegged is another matter entirely.

It depends on who is doing the pegging. But if they wet the bacon, it's too goddamn far!

If they wet it, it'll be a smoother in.
Well, I guess it depends on what they use to wet it.

It probably doesn't need the wetting. It's oily enough on its own.

A good, stern and cruel pegging would show the difference.

Meanwhile, in Virginia:

And Virginia's probably considered to be the most progressive state in the South--so much so, even, that most of the South considers it not to be a part of the South.

There are those who feel 6million would be little more than a good start.
