Current Mixed Feelings

Why bother with any other forum?
Forum rules
We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

I have a ticket to a 0940 showing of The Force Awakens in IMAX 3D, but it's in the 3rd row of the theater.

I myself could be watching SW as we speak.

However, I would have been consigned to the Outer Rim Territories. Whereas I would much rather be near the Galactic Centre. Seat-wise. Been there, done that.

So I'm innernetting Cineplex showtimes and locations, seeing nothing hopeful.

And then...it appears to me.

Just as a man in the desert, lost in his desperation and hopelessness, perceives in the distance a source of water... only this time, for real: one single seat in the centre of the IMAX, 3D showing, which amazingly no-one had claimed.

10 am Sunday in a distant suburb of Toronto named Oakville.

I'll take it. Kismet and all that.

There's a pretty good strip club not too far away.

Not sure why I felt the need to add that.

I'm weighing making my first viewing of the original trilogy before I go see the new one. I have a feeling it'd help?

Eh. I did, my son didn't. It's not like he doesn't already know what happens backwards and forwards.

Ah, what the hell. Let's experiment with Adam. You've gone this long without seeing the original trilogy. Why not go into The Force Awakens fresh and free of reference? You don't *need* to have seen the others. Let us know what it's like to see it without having seen the others first.

To be fair, I've seen Episode I and Episode III. I feel like I've probably seen the original trilogy in chunks over the years, but I have absolutely no memory of sitting down to watch the entirety of any of them.

Does that disqualify me for the experiment?

Nah. You ought to do it. Do you some good. You won't be bogged down by over-familiarity with some of the callbacks.

You're hoping to get Dalty to see the seventh in the Fast/Furious franchise without his having seen all the ones leading up to it. Might as well do something similar, yourself, with the Star Wars franchise.

I saw it last weekend, walked out when it was done and texted a friend "this is why movie theaters still exist."

It was such fun and I hope to go back at least one more time. There were some things I recognized as callbacks which I didn't fully understand, but it didn't matter. It was damn near a flawless film. Far beyond anything I'd expected going in.

I didn't read that in Elton John's voice. I read it in Moon Man's.

I withdrew from my doctoral program. I have only written a few pages, and it's hard to maintain my line of thought with the double stresses of work and Jubboiter.

So pretty damn down about that.

I hate my job, though, so I need some light at the end of the tunnel, so I've fixated on dream job number two: independent photographer. I know there are lots of things I don't know about things like studio lighting and such, so I enrolled in our local community college's photography a.f.a program as a part-time student (unlike Wash. U., they don't care how long it takes, so it's OK that I can only do one class at a time until such time that I'm liberated from my job.) Cost per semester for a single class is just slightly higher than what I was paying to be a doctoral candidate.

First up during the summer semester: a Photoshop class. Prepare yourselves.
