Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
Forum rules
We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

There's another word you could use - but it's not allowed.

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
There's nothing really bizarre about the following video, but it does a decent job of illustrating the various accents near where I grew up:
http://www.wtvm.com/story/30970358/icon ... wn-in-boaz
The first two people have done a decent job suppressing it. There's still a touch of it, but it's not enough to stand out or grate.
The guy at 0:15 is a good example of someone who has kept the accent but has applied the generic "newscaster" delivery on top of it. He looks and sounds almost like a Chris Cooper parody of a southerner.
The guy at 1:01 is a good example of a guy who speaks with the educated, "city" version of my native area's accent. He grew up in and is the mayor of Boaz. Boaz has just under 10,000 people in it. That's about the same number of people living in Guntersville and about half the number of the people living in Albertville. Albertville's about as big as it gets in our area. Boaz, Albertville, and Guntersville are all on U.S. Route 431, and they're all close enough to one another to feel sort of like one really long town.
The above three accents are the height of Sand Mountain/Lower Appalachian sophistication. Here, again, is my stepfather's accent:
His accent is more typical of the working class near where I grew up.

I am allowed to be absolutely shit-faced on booze in my house. In Alabama will that extend to my car?

That analogy is rendered false by the truly fucked up booze laws in Alabama.

The laws are fucked up because they're so unbelievably and stupidly strict. We've talked about this.

NFL legend Bart Starr Was Victim of "Brutal" Secret Alabama Hazing
"One of the most respected football players in the history of the game, and arguably one of the toughest, was hazed so badly while at the University of Alabama that it derailed his college career, disqualified him from military service and affected him throughout his 16 years with the Green Bay Packers."
