Current Non-Annoyance

Why bother with any other forum?
Forum rules
We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

That sub training's serious business. He'll know everything he needs to know backwards by the time he's assigned.

I already made that joke to him, and he said, "Sorry, mom, I'm going in as an officer, so I get to skip all the seaman jokes."

Anyhoo, my cousin came to visit a couple weekends ago and brought four friends with her to stay in my living room. This was worth it for her skill in cocktails. She figured out what to do with the beet shrub (drinking vinegar) that I bought and whose website recipe was icky. (Her solution: rye Manhattan. Yum.)

Just now I'm imbibing her other suggestion: 2 parts peaty Scotch to 1 part Bemedictine to 1/2 part lemon juice. Yum yum yum.

Spring has sprung. Nice two mile walk along the river for a late lunch in a waterside pub is called for.

Taxi back though, I'm not insane!

One of the work streams leads on a programme I am working with is from Texas. She is the most polite, friendly and delightful person I have ever met.

Ask her how she feels about the Oklahoma Sooners. That will change your impression of her right quick.

UT Austin grads born in the fifties hate Oklahoma so much that they refuse to be called baby boomers.

Why do they feel so threatened? Oklahoma has an average musical and twisters...... and that's about it!

Alabama and Oklahoma both dump way more money into college football than most other schools do. They usually end up with decent teams as a result of this, but it's a best-teams-money-can-buy sort of situation. It's stacking the deck. It can also be insulting to the people who go to the schools for an education. It's not enough to say that academics at both places is underfunded by way of comparison. Academics is so underfunded by way of comparison that it's almost absurd. There's this idea that academics will benefit due to a trickle-down effect, but it doesn't really happen. The finances and resources mostly get dumped back into sports.

UT Austin is a solid public school with a real academic focus. It manages to maintain this focus while also having generally solid sports programs.

How are they allowed to spend so much public money on what is essentially a feeder system for $$$billion entertainment franchises?

Instantly I feel a little silly for saying that, because what are Uni's if not feeder systems for many, many other $$$billion industries? And now I feel conflicted because I realise that for some reason I clearly value lawyers and doctors and engineers and scientists over ball players which might not be fair.

And now I feel sillier because of course a doctor or a scientist is worth more to society........ or are they?

Fuck, it's all confusing.

American college is what happens when Adam Smith and Karl Marx take a running go and headbutt one another.

I am currently quite not annoyed that the Blackhawks have lost their series. It means no idiots hollering down my street past 1 am when they win.

Plus they are evil.

In the rooftop bar of the Majestic Hotel in Saigon on the last proper night of my trip. Flight home leaves SGN at midnight tomorrow.

The band is all kinds of cheesy and awful and hotel lounge bar typical. Perfect!!!

I bought a Duotang today. I have my 55-page master's thesis printed out. It feels like a real thing now.

I am going to take a glamour shot of the two of us together in a scenic local spot.
