We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

Re: Brexit
Anne Tvinnereim, Deputy Leader of Norway's Centre Party recalls the scaremongering that was heard in Norway's 1994 referendum over EU membership. Does any of this sound familiar?
"They said we would lose 100,000 jobs; they said the biggest businesses would leave Norway and there would be no more investment. They said the interest rates would increase significantly. The Yes campaign even made a calculation that every Norwegian family would lose £3,000. They said we would be totally isolated if we did not join the EU - they wouldn't want to trade with us and we would have no negotiating power whatsoever. We would be a small isolated island up in the north with no influence."
She goes on to say, "And of course, it was ALL RUBBISH!"
Imagine that....

Oh yeah! The Norweigans and the Swedes aren't in the EU and they do okay!

Re: Brexit
All right, between that and the fact that a "leave" vote would probably destroy Cameron's career, I'm on board with leaving. You've talked me into it.

Re: Brexit
Cameron could be toast either way. The way he has handled the campaign may have split his party and he may have to go, whatever the result, to reunite it.

Re: Brexit
Split to the right? The left? Or just down the middle?

Re: Brexit
Just split. The Europe question has been a historical Achilles heel of the Conservative party since the 70s.
That said, part of me thinks Cameron may be a genius. In one double period in power he will have:
1) Destroyed the Liberal Democrats as a political force.
2) Got the Tories re-elected by majority for the first time in generation.
3) Sent the Labout party on a lurch to the left and pulled them into unelectable disarray and finally;
4) Settled the Europe question, one way or another, for the foreseeable future.
Maybe he's had a plan or can spin it as such.

Re: Brexit
If Britain leaves the EU, what happens to all the EU folk living in Britain who are not also British residents? Does staying become harder for them and require more paperwork? What does it mean for the Future Ex Mrs. Dalty?

Nobody is going to get deported overnight and Mrs Dalty is not an EU citizen anyway.

Re: Brexit
How about in a year? Is it one of those situations where non-Brits with a lot of money have nothing to worry about, and non-Brits with very little money might be made to leave? How might it affect people like Friend-to-Corona-Coming-Attractions Remco?Dalty wrote:Nobody is going to get deported overnight and Mrs Dalty is not an EU citizen anyway.

Re: Brexit
That's a good question. Scotland would presumably leave the UK. What effect would this have on Northern Ireland or Wales?

It's generally a safe bet that big changes like this aren't as easy for the little guy as they are for the fat cats.

Re: Brexit
Of vague relation to the topic at hand:
When I first started seeing "EU" written out, it would make me think of the way Germans pronounce the "eu" diphthong. It sounds a lot like a Brit saying "Oi!"

Have I mentioned yet how little I know about European politics and government? Almost as little as I know about the Republican campaign here in the states!Mal Shot First wrote:Sweden's in the EU.Adam54 wrote:Oh yeah! The Norweigans and the Swedes aren't in the EU and they do okay!

Re: Brexit
I don't know if this means anything, but one of the staunch Trump supporters in my feed appears to be in full support of Britain leaving the EU.

It means that Trump supporters tend to be isolationists, in terms of economic and immigration policy.

I imagine if any of them stem from Reaganesque beginnings they are naturally distrustful of "Big" government of which the EU is the text book definition of everything they hate.

Voted. It's on a knife edge. I may stay up for this! Works differently to an election though so not exactly blockbuster entertainment.
