May wrote the lyrics, but there's nothing to say Mercury couldn't have.
There's no denying that big butts have featured in rock. Spinal Tap, too, tapped dat.

Re: Songs that annoy Huffy Flouncers
I also hadn't really thought about the drums. I can see why Mal assumed it was a synth arrangement. For one, the song itself sounds pretty synthpop-like, and synthpop often employs synth drums exclusively.
The drumming in the song is done with metronome precision, and the song feels like it's close to (maybe a touch faster than) being at about two beats a second/120 beats a minute. That's a pretty common range for pop song. It's not out-of-the-ordinary enough to draw a person's attention to it. If anything does draw a person's attention to the drumming, it's that it completely drops out during some of the vocal and synth parts.
There's a warmth to the cymbals that suggest it's a real person playing, but synth cymbals these days can be pretty impressive, and the rest of the drums sound pretty tinny and synthy. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that it's some mixture of drum sampling and live drumming.

Just reminds me of one of my favourite insults:

The radio at work is relentlessly tuned to classic rock. This song is my kryptonite.

I dunno, Mal. Bachman-Turner Overdrive is a Canadian band. "Takin' Care of Business" gets played a shit-ton down here, it's true, but I imagine it gets played even more up there.

Re: Songs that annoy Huffy Flouncers
I guess I can't sympathize on that level.
What annoys me is that I get the feeling that people take the chorus out of context and treat the song as a "blue collar pride" type of song. It certainly seems to start out that way, but it really turns into a song about relishing being able to afford doing nothing. In that sense, "takin' care of business" is ironic, of course.
Maybe I'm looking at it all wrong, though, and maybe my annoyance is misplaced.

The Rap Critic agrees with me:Mal Shot First wrote: Upon reading Mango's post about Nicki Minaj, it occurred to me that her song has subversive potential by taking a sample from a song that objectifies women based on the size/shape of their butts and incorporating it into a song that objectifies men based on the size of their penises. Nicki does what rappers have been doing for decades, i.e., boasting about her sexual prowess, but doing this as a woman is still considered somewhat taboo and easily gets you labeled as a slut. By framing it in terms of sexual conquests, she's sort of trying to preempt any derogatory comments about her open promiscuity.
One way in which this attempt falls flat, though, is in how the lines from Sir Mix-a-Lot's song were used in "Anaconda" - instead of actually focusing on the anaconda, the chorus ends up focusing on the buns again. The other way in which it falls flat, of course, is in how the video also literally turns the gaze back on the women - for a song about men's reproductive organs, there are strikingly few (zero) men in the video. Instead of achieving empowerment, Nicki Minaj only succeeds in objectifying herself. Well done!
Plus, you know, the song sucks.

Upon revisiting this thread (I have Mal's hate-hate relationship with "Anaconda" to thank for my revisitation; I'd forgotten about this thread, to be honest), it occurred to me that you may be attempting to establish shtick/force-fad a line into the "In-Joke Guide." It's either that, or you really do like all these songs the rest of us find to be pretty shitty. Or, you know, that thing Fake Strider says.Space Tycoon wrote:I love that song.

I thought it was from the soundtrack of a J-Lo / Eric Stoltz movie.

I've been seriously questioning my judgment and/or state of mind after this weekend, so I think I am in no position to judge much of anything these days.
