Teach Dalty American!

Why bother with any other forum?
Forum rules
We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

I'm going to start treating this thread like it's also a "Teach Non-Daltys British!" thread. I'd create a new thread, but that's just a ton of work. Seriously. A whole fucking ton. (Tonne, you say? Wrong! They don't even weigh the same!)

Anyway, here's this:

It's pretty unfunny to me, despite assurances in the comment section--from Americans and Brits--that it's hilarious. I suspect that the Americans who insist it is funny are the sorts of Americans who are under the impression that all British comedy is funny just because it's British, and I suspect the Brits who insist it is funny are relatives of the guy who died of laughter in the seventies while watching that episode of The Goodies. (I went out of my way to watch that episode. I don't remember laughing.)

Why's the above clip so unfunny to me? It can't just be that it's puerile and bawdy. I've been known to enjoy puerile and bawdy. (I realize I'm asking a question about my own tastes and that it's not necessarily a question someone other than yours truly will be able to answer.)

Is it funny to Brits? Which Brits? It feels like Two and a Half Men-level humor to me. It feels like the British Mama's Family, but even less funny.

Is the above not a representative clip? Is the show usually much funnier?

No, it's not. Mrs Brown's Boys is reprehensible dog shit that represent the very worst and appeals to Saturday night TVs lowest common denominators of viewers. Awful. Just awful. Embaressing.

Speaking of embarrassing:

I reread what I wrote and put "weigh" where I had originally put "way."

I've never said I'm a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that I'm not. I've said and done things I regret, and the typo spotted today on this more-than-a-day-old post is one of them. Anyone who knows me knows this typo doesn't reflect who I am. I wrote it, I was wrong, and I apologize.

My faith in you, and as a consequence the universe, is shaken to its very core. I am not sure there is any way back from this.

"Weigh" is close to "Neigh" and you know what that could mean around these parts!!

When I was taught to shoot, and when I still shoot a shotgun or rifle, I was told to hold the gun tight into my shoulder to minimise recoil etc.

Why, when I see American TV shows and movies, do people who are carrying out tactical moves such as soldiers etc. holding their rifles in ready positions away from and above their shoulders, with the bottom tip of their stocks against the top of their shoulders?

Probably because most of them are actors who don't know how to hold firearms properly.

The same reason badasses hold their pistols sideways to shoot.

So I see a recount is looming in Wisconsin. I see a lot of comments drawing parallels with 2000 and Bush 'stealing' Florida? I thought that went all the way through courts etc and Bush was declared winner. Did I miss something?

IN 2000 they started a recount of Florida; the state Supreme Court upheld it, but the US Supremes halted it, leaving Florida for Bush. We'll never know the real count.

And beyond the halted Florida recount, there were charges of voting rights violations and shady stuff in and around the polling situation. There's a whole Wikipedia page about the recount, if anyone is interested:

Seems likely in Pennsylvania and Michigan too.
