Street Fighter (1994) - it really is awful. Mrs Dalty is enjoying it.

Is that how you know it's awful?

Ah, the Hiddlesbum. I've heard it's epic. Eagerly awaiting its revelation.

Re: What are you lookin' at?! Right now...
Oh, saw "La La Land" the other day. I loved it; the spousal unit said it wasn't really his cup of tea. While reminiscent of and a tribute to old-time Hollywood musicals, it has more of a modern sensibility, both in the the less frequent musical numbers (which serve to punctuate emotional peaks/valleys) and in the romance, which is more realistic in its development. I also felt it really stressed the nature of the creative persona and the kind of sacrifices it requires--another reason I really liked it and TSU was not as enthusiastic.
Beautiful design, enjoyable musical numbers--Gosling and Stone are passable singers/dancers, but their acting more than compensates--and nostalgic without being sappy. I consider it a feel-good musical: nothing super deep or painful--although at one point I was struggling to suppress some audible sobs--just a lovely romance between two artists.

So...... genuine question. Gosling, a good actor? All I ever see of him is strange, unblinking puppy-dog eyes and slightly stoned delivery?

He certainly has the charisma to be a star, and I think he has a subtlety you find in good actors. I'm not sure this was the most challenging role, but he was really believable in it, and appealing, which is what you want in this kind of role.Dalty wrote:So...... genuine question. Funny you bring this up. I was on the phone with the buddy the other night and we started talking about Gosling and couldn't think of an actor with a higher batting average in terms of taking roles in critically acclaimed movies. His performances in them aside, has anyone in the past decade or two had more luck picking critical successes than him?Dalty wrote:So...... genuine question. Gosling, a good actor? BBC sketch show "Revolting" seems to be giving Guardian readers attacks of the vapours.

It follows two major trends followed by most of (maybe all of) the adaptations before and since: (1) it makes Quatermain much younger than he was in the source material, and (2) it drops a young, wholly-absent-from-the-source-material female into the narrative.

Watching "We Were Soldiers" with Mrs Dalty who is Vietnamese. Woah! Coming from Saigon / HCMC as she does I was unprepared for the sheer level of hatred they still harbour for the North Vietnamese!

"A Series of Unfortunate Events"--really nails the tone of the books, and it's really well cast. Plus the design is terrific. Fun little show.

Re: What are you lookin' at?! Right now...
I finally got around to watching Deadpool. Seriously, I think I've had the DVD from NetFlix for like a year. it was pretty good, had some laughs, but since I stopped reading comics in the 80s/90s, I never got into the whole Deadpool thing so I didn't have much emotional investment into it.
