Fun Japanese Things

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

Linkage also didn't work, far as I could tell.
I just rewatched the NieR:Automata trailer and laughed all over again.

My guess is that you meant to post one of these two (working) links:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1voex ... utube_tech
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03fh0bg
The second link works, but the content isn't available. It's probably a regional thing.

Re: Fun Japanese Things
Watching Asahi TV tonight.
After catching up on the World Baseball Classic (the real World Series), the TV switched to a talk show where they were really pushing the new Doraemon film (the 37th(!) Doraemon feature film, which came out March 4th, and has been the #1 movie in Japan since then).
It was a pretty cool segment. They did a ranking of Doraemon's gadgets, compared episodes from the 1979 anime with the same story as done in the 2005 anime, and they talked about inventions that Doraemon's gadgets foretold.
Which is how I learned about the Megahonyaku (Mega-translate!) or "multilingual translation megaphone" by Panasonic.
And speaking of mega/microphones, I forgot to post this screenshot back in January. I see this super-microphone-array thing a lot during press conferences on Japanese TV:

The text on the back of the magazine could be read "The author's rod inadvertently spewed forth to completion."

Saw this in a friend's Facebook feed yesterday:
The "fun" part is how visibly crushed the animators/programmers are by Miyazaki's comments. The part where Miyazaki loses any remaining hope for humanity is less fun.

Re: Fun Japanese Things
I recently got a 500 yen (~$4.37) coupon for a Japanese shopping service, From Japan (Most Japanese merchants, apart from Amazon and a handful of others, do not want to deal with international transactions, so if you want to order items from Japan, particularly used or hard to find things, you often have to employ such a shopping service). I had not ever tried this particular service before, but decided to take advantage of the coupon.
I used their service to purchase a used copy of Guitar Magazine from November 2011. It was used on Amazon.jp marketplace (can order new items from Amazon.jp just fine, but 95% of used things, again, you must use a 3rd-party shopping service) for just 170 yen (~$1.48). My coupon handled that and the service fee. The kicker came when I was sent the charge for shipping the magazine from Japan to the US. Their shipping options ended ranging from a crazy $16 for the cheapest option to $40 for express (I went cheap). The normal-sized magazine arrived this week in a gigantic box marked fragile that would have held my computer monitor. I probably won't use this particular service again, and will stick to ones I know which do more reasonable packaging and shipping charges.
The magazine itself is cool. There are actual females with guitars in the magazine who are not just there to look pretty, for one. The reason I bought this particular issue was for it's special "Solo Guitar Anime Hits" selection: 6 songs arranged for a single guitar, and one of those was the opening to The Rose of Versailles. The selections are Anpanman's March (Anpanman), Sazae's Family (Sazae-san), I'll GIve You Romance (Dragonball), Roses Scatter Beautifully (The Rose of Versailles), A Cruel Angel's Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion), and Gatchaman's Song (Gatchaman).
In a month, I will cross the two-year mark in terms of taking classical guitar lessons. I can pick out and play the basic melody of the song right now. The transcription seems to be very accurate and very beautiful. It'll take some practice before I can do the intro or add in the bass line notes.

The words on the t-shirts in the video above aren't really examples of Engrish. The humor stems more from the fact that the wearers are utterly oblivious to the meaning of the sometimes raunchy words and phrases on their shirts. Like the two girls wearing matching shirts that say "FUGLY" without realizing what that means.

The anime One Piece X Kabuki theater. I would totally watch this if I were in Osaka right now.

Re: Fun Japanese Things
I've been working my way through all of the television episodes of Lupin III. At this point, I've seen series 1, 2, and 4 all the way through; I'm following 5 as it airs, and I am now close to half way through Series 3 (after which I will watch "3.5" - the woman called Mine Fujiko).
I just finished Series 2 last week - it was 155 episodes long. Some of them are really really cool (Hayao Miyazaki did two of them which were instantly recognizable - judging by the animation, they probably had as much budget alone as the entire rest of the show combined), and some were really bizarre. There was a Rose of Versailles cross-over episode, which was kind of fun if you are a fan of both shows, even though it really played the Lupin's gang thinks he's suddenly gay joke way too hard. Transitioning to Series 3 was a bit jarring, as the animation style is a bit different, and the theme song is not the same, but I like it.
I really like the opening for Series 5:
(Mostly, I like the magical boob jiggle that happens to occur just as Lupin ogles...)
