The World Cup 2014

Why bother with any other forum?

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

That high score is probably not great news to the promotions manager at Audible. See, audible.de's current promotion is that, on every day the German team plays a World Cup game, Audible will give away a Kindle Fire per German goal to people who bought an audiobook on that day. My imagination's crazy exaggerated run-away version of how it will play out is something like the McDonalds 1984 Olympics promotion (parodied in The Simpsons - "Lisa's First Word") - http://www.cracked.com/article_19334_th ... ideas.html

"It's in South America this time, boss. Europeans NEVER win! Plus it's soccer. The scores are ALWAYS small!" - 30 Kindle Fires later: "I will personally put a virus on every other Kindle!"

I know it! New Coke and the Hoover 'Free USA Flights' are, with that, the things I remind our marketing team about when they get all carried away with a new promotion but have no back out plan.

Ahhhhh, well. And now Italy are losing to Costa Rica so it looks like we are out in the first round. Shamazing!

That's it. Costa Rica beat the Italians and therefore England are out.

If Uruguay do the job over Italy on Tuesday then the Italians can share our flight home!

My weekly email from audible.de clarifies that the Kindle Fire promotion only applies to these group games (Vorrunden) and not the next rounds of the tournament - so just on June 16, 21, and 26. :)

I know it would be frowned upon, but why wouldn't Germany and USA just make a gentleman's agreement to play to a draw, insuring that they both advance to the knock-out round?

Germany and Austria were accused of doing something like that in the '82 World Cup, in a game that became known as the "Disgrace of Gijón". That game is the reason that the last two games of the group stage are now carried out simultaneously. As the case of the Germany-U.S.A. match shows, it's still an imperfect system, depending on the constellation that results from the previous two rounds of games.

It's also very hard to try and make a professional sportsperson not to try to win.

Hope the US get through and Portugal fuck off home.

It was easy enough for some of the people Mike Tyson fought.

Some of them *were* tried... in the Court of Public Opinion, if nowhere else.

I don't know how hard it is to convince professional sportspeople from Nigeria not to try to win.

Clearly, they did. It's hard to run around with mess in your pants.
