It's more like an oven where the heat source is only at the top. There are no open flames involved.

The following are the things Americans might know as grills:
The George Foreman Grill (picture 2) isn't a grill in the traditional sense, I guess, but because of its grooves it can create the grill lines characteristic of open-fire grills. What the hell do grills look like in Britain?
The word "grill" has been used somewhat figuratively to describe these things as well:

I have an improved version of the George Foreman grill. It is, indeed, called a grill.
In the UK a grill is traditionally the draw above the oven, or the top of the oven itself, where you would grill something. Like this:
Using this:
That's what we call "grilling" something. That's a broiler to you, yes?

Except it doesn't touch the food. On a grill the food sits on a grill on top of the heat, a broiler heats from above so you don't get the stripy burned bits.Dalty wrote:So a broiler is basically a grill?

That's because you are weirdos who think boiling meat is an appropriately mode of preparation. Here in 'Murica! we like our meat to know it's been cooked, dammit!

I honestly don't think I have ever boiled any meat, ever, or eaten any boiled meat. Can you even boil meat?neglet wrote:That's because you are weirdos who think boiling meat is an appropriately mode of preparation. Here in 'Murica! we like our meat to know it's been cooked, dammit!

You can boil goose. Man, that Julian Casablancas is a sexy mother.
Jubbers is a meat boiler. There's nothing wrong with it.
I usually only boil meat when I'm making a stock or adding flavor to a stock. Then again, I don't cook with meat very often these days. My aunt boils whenever she makes dumplings. Boiling is an essential component to the making of Deep Southern-style dumplings.

When you're making stew that includes meat, you're basically boiling the meat. The only difference is that you're not just using water to do so.
And like Goiter already mentioned, making stock would usually require meat unless you're making vegetable broth.

I also claimed boiling was "a essential" component to the making of Deep Southern-style dumplings. I must have had a different adjective (or maybe no adjective at all) there originally.

Deep fried pickles. Had them in Orlando as a starter. They taste soooo Yankee.

I'm a big fan of deep-fried pickles. I like them in chip form more than I like them in spear form. The breading-to-pickle ratio isn't as heavily skewed.

Along those lines, has anyone ever tried deep fried olives? I have them every year at the state fair and if I had the ambition, know-how, equipment and something other than Ipsy's Guide to Deep-Frying in my cookbook collection, I'd make them myself.

I think they're about two bucks a box. I'm not sure of the shipping costs, though. We'll have to look into it.
