There is no fucking way Cruz is a serious candidate. I believe he's basically angling to become a power player in the Republican party by showing that he can get headlines and donors. Hell, he's polling in single digits. Either that, or he's doing the Huckabee and just promoting future books/speaking appearances/FOX News consulting.

I remain firm in my belief that he's doing this solely to raise money and conservative fervor so that he can out-conservative the current wingnut and become governor of Texas in 2018.

While that's possible, I don't see why he'd step back from Senator to Governor. Plus, he'd have to go pretty crazy to out-conservative current gov Abbott or ex-gov Perry. There's theories that he's solely doing this so that a more mainstream candidate (re: Jeb or Christie) will be more palatable to the voters. Of course, seeing how right-wing, religious, equal-rights-denying the party is getting it is possible a slightly less-righty GOP would still not be enough to win the primary or presidential election.

Oh HELL no. I escaped from the frozen deathscape of the midwest 15 years ago and have no plans on going back. It was 65 and sunny today and I have the top off my corvette. I don't think I'd do well there.

Easy. He's an egomaniac who would rather run a state than be one vote out of 100. Plus governors traditionally do better in presidential elections, so there'd be no stopping him from trying again in say...2024 or so. Enough of the old guard Republicans will have died out in ten years that either the extreme right will have completely taken over, or zealots like Cruz will have learned to moderate.

I'll be curious to see. It's a time of transition for the Republican party, and his campaign is a major test case in which way they'll go, assuming they ever start thinking long term.

It's hard to trust a guy who was raised by a guy who, though he clearly named his son after Ayn Rand, insists otherwise. ("Growing up," Wikipedia says, "he went by 'Randy,' but his wife shortened it to 'Rand.'" Uh huh. Nice try. Not buying it.)

(I'm kidding. I believe he was called "Randy" growing up. I also believe his wife started calling him "Rand" and that it stuck. On the other hand, I think its sticking was fully embraced by a group of people who strongly wanted to associate him with Randian objectivism, and I also think Rand Paul recognized this and was fine with it.)
