I don't know if incompetent is quite the word in this case.

Very competent city government though. The officer has already been fired and charged with murder.

As you know, we have somewhat tighter gun control laws in the UK. Single action handguns and rifles are allowed up to .22 caliber with a licence, or larger caliber if judged suitable for the land or task, e.g. A zoo with big cats or rhinos etc. is allowed to keep larger. Outside this it is largely for pest control and competition target shooting. Shotguns are also allowed.

I have a shotgun licence now, pending purchase of my first skeet shooting gun as a hobby. One of the things I had to do to get the licence was have a member of the local police force visit my home and interview me (plus I had to supply references) and then he tried to break into the gun cabinet I had to have fitted. After the interview, the references and his attempts to wrench the cabinet out he declared I was allowed to keep a gun.

It was at this point I was told that if I had to shoot an intruder ever then it was advisable to do it in the front, below the waist, thus proving he (or she) was advancing on me and I was defending myself with no intent to kill.

Apparently in the back, anywhere, is very bad and if the person subsequently died I would likely be charged with murder as the person was retreating.

How about if you use a bow and arrow? Say, the Chitauri have invaded your town or something.

If you're not a well-to-do white guy, does this mean it's unlikely you'll "pass" the interview stage?

No, they just want to check you have appropriate security, appropriate respect for firearms to own one and aren't a fucking eejit!!!

I ask because this kind of thing has been done--and continues to be done--in the US. Demonstrably so, even. This isn't a case of misguided bleeding-heart-ism on my part.

I don't know if it's done in the UK. I rely on people like you telling me.
