Bats v Supes

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

:(

I consider your baiting me central to our dynamic. I didn't realize how one-sided it was.

I think I finally understand what it must have been like to date me in the early aughts. 'S bleak, man.

Nope. I just know if I ask a question I will get an interesting, thought provoking and entertaining answer which I will enjoy reading. Same for Mal and everyone else here. If I was baiting then that question would start with "Your mother...."

Or does it not work like AICN?

Unfortunately, any answer you get from me is likely to get edited twenty times after you've already read it and moved on. Typing while Jubboiter is still awake leads to sloppy and unfocused writing. I've already edited my post something like six times.

I think I may finally be done. It's not because I'm happy with the writing. It's because I'm worn out, Jubboiter's finally down for her nap, and I want to finish the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode I started five hours ago.

If she's having a nap, you should have a nap too. Daddy Daughter rule.

I had to add that because as I posted it I realised I told an insomniac to go take a nap and was worried it might be up there with telling a person with depression to cheer the fuck up or a person with anxiety to calm down, and I felt bad.

You people are weird.

And I also thought the "Watchmen" adaptation was meh. Watchable, but too Snydery.

That's a pretty good way to put it, negs. If the property being adapted meant less to me, it's likely the movie would barely register. It's hard to say. Watchmen has been a part of me since the eighties. If I were going into the movie clean, I'd probably watch it, be annoyed by the Snyderisms, and come away from it thinking there were some interesting things in it here and there.

You know, an analogy occurred to me yesterday after discussing the merits of Snyder's Watchmen adaptation (or his comic book adaptations in general). Snyder's method of adapting is like Seth Brundle's transporter machine from The Fly - with precisely the same problem. Snyder disassembles the source text into its constituent pieces and then reassembles it in a different medium. Much like Brundle's bland/synthetic steak, however, Snyder's result of the transportation/adaptation process, while succeeding in recreating the appearance of the original, simply lacks the essence that made the original what it was. Snyder gives us his stripped down interpretation of the steak rather than the steak as steak (the "steak-in-itself," if you will).

(Or, as Kant would put it, "Steak an sich." Or, as Heidegger would put it, "Steaksein.")

As Dupree would say, the steak's "steakness."

I've never seen anyone compare Snyder's film methodology to The Fly before, but it works for me.

I like the cut of your jib, MSF.
