I've learned more about Obama from my Alabama kin, today. It turns out he's both a "monster" and an "idiot," and the next mass shooting will be "on him." He also apparently needs to be impeached immediately, and it's also apparently insane and an embarrassment that it hasn't been done already.

Did you point out he isn't going to take anyone's guns and will actually just...... gasp...... make gun dealers register and make background checks better?

It's all about the slippery-slope argument.

It also has to do with what they genuinely believe to be their constitutional right. Granted, their belief in this having this right thanks to personal interpretation of what some have argued is vague language. This is why I think it is good to leave less and less room for interpretation. Since I'm a selfish bastard, of course, I want the lessening of this room to work in my favor.

I know people from Alabama with no preexisting interest in guns who have bought them for reactionary reasons. They were led to believe the government didn't want them to have guns, so they went out and bought them. Out of spite.

My father has also seeming become more interested in them in a reactionary manner. There were two guns in the house up until a couple of years ago, when the hard right became convinced Obama was coming for them. Now there are a scary number of weapons and ammunition in their basement...

Most of them (at least fourteen of them) are in Jubbers's youngest brother's room, in fact. He's a high schooler. He's sleeping at night with rifles and shotguns propped up against his bedroom wall. Are they loaded? I dunno. I hope not.
