Surprisingly, they're usually not naughty things.

It occurred to me yesterday that both the German and the Russian word for "emperor" most likely have the word "caesar" as their root.

In the German "Kaiser" (pronounced KY-zer) you have a version of "caesar" in which the C is pronounced as a K and each of the vowels is its own sound. You end up with something that you might spell like Kaësar, and that sounds a lot like the German pronunciation of Kaiser.

The Russian word for emperor is "tsar." The alternative English spelling "czar" hides the hard TS of the Russian pronunciation, which is probably also the reason I hear a lot of English-speakers pronounce it as "zar" rather than "tsar" (with a TS sound like that in the word "arts"). However, the Russian word is spelled with the Cyrillic equivalent of the letter C, and the spelling "czar" reveals its connection to "caesar." The Russian word for "caesar" is Цезарь (pronunciation: TSE-zar). It only takes a shortening or omission of the vowel to arrive at Царь (tsar).

I always just assumed as much, if less in-depth.

That's why I always insist on using a Kaiser roll as the bread bowl for my Caesar salad.

I was in the shower, thinking about work as usual, then I remembered that I told you guys about this in a thread about what Mal thinks about in the shower. So, accidentally and by proxy, I thought about Mal in the shower.

Oh c'mon. Don't pretend like that isn't a daily occurrence.

Three or four times a week, for example, I find myself in the shower thinking "I wonder what Dalty is doing right now" as I'm performing the Dance of a Thousand Goiters. It's natural, Dimple. Don't be ashamed.
