I thought I'd give The Purge a try.
The movie, that is, not the actual 12-hours-of-anarchy thing.

Shame about Thunderbirds as he had directorial promise.

It's a shame he didn't film some shots of himself playing a young Orson Welles back in his TNG days. He could have coupled those shots with more recent shots of himself playing an older Welles and stitched it all together into decent biopic.

Well, give him a minute. Artists need time to create.

Shark Week on Discovery. Luckily no faux-doc bullshit this year. Just the entertaining Mythbusters vs. Jaws 40th anniversary episode.

I also agree that Lively's butt was quite nice.
I also agree that "The Shallows" is much better than one might expect.
It reminded me, in a positive way, of the "Tomb Raider" reboot games: a hot chick gets messed way the hell up and basically full body bruises her way from one bad situation to the next.

I have waited for 41 years for a good shark movie. Jaws 2 and Deep Blue Sea being just above passable. Is it good?

It's legit good. It's got the highly coveted Adam Skoglund Seal Of Approval. And if that's not good enough it's at 73% or so on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was a fairly good movie, I enjoyed it. People are too hard on it, it's an interesting concept. But I think they made a mistake playing it as a straight-up, serious suspense-thriller. They could have gone the satire and dark comedy route, made a commentary on Americans' seeming acceptance of brutal, random violence.Space Tycoon wrote:I thought I'd give The Purge a try.

I'll try the sequel tomorrow, I hear it's better. Then possibly The Purge: Election Year in theatres.
Now there's a title just begging for an XXX-Rated parody. Just change around a few consonants.

I also give "The Shallows" my approval.
I also, also give the second Purge movie a seal of approval. It's less good, but it is a fun watch. Does a bit more with the purge concept.
And finally, I have just finished watching "Bone Tomahawk" and holy crap, ya'll need to see that.
I admit it's overly long with a languid pace, but it's really well done and blends western and horror together well. And it has a bunch of great actors.
Like seriously, I watched "The Shallows" earlier and "Bone Tomahawk" just now. I'm riding a good movie high.

The Vacation remake/reboot/sequel thingy. A few mild chuckles raised so far.

I'm going with a war-on-terror double feature today. Already watched Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (Meh. Pretty all over the place.) and am about to move on to Eye in the Sky, for which I have far greater expectations.

Saw the new Tarzan movie tonight. If you can look past the often used White guy saves the day conceit it's rather enjoyable. Critics have burned it for its slow pacing but I thought things moved along pretty good. I've always been drawn to colonial type movies (The Four Feathers, Legionnaire) so Tarzan clicked with me. Not too much chest thumping, meathead nonsense. Just a really good adventure film with some incredibly outrageous action scenes.

"Pawn Sacrifice," doing its best to make chess interesting and Bobby Fischer disturbed. Working better on the second count.

How many movies have been made now about Bobby Fischer being disturbed?

Don't know. I can't say I've ever gone searching for Bobby-Fischer-Is-Disturbed movies. I can't, but I bet Josh Waitzkin.
