I've never heard of this 7-season target for TV shows. I always thought that networks will try to stretch out a popular and profitable program for as long as they can. It may be different for cable and premium channels like AMC, HBO, and Showtime.

I think one of you guys explained the 7 seasons x 24 episodes as a syndication target back in the "other place" ?

Isn't it 5 seasons for syndication?

I want to say it might even be 4. Usually around 100 episodes, which I think is why sitcoms generally run ~25 episode seasons now.

Network sitcoms anyway.

I still can't get my head around Sweeps so I am even more useless than usual now.

Every November, February and May, networks try to convince advertisers that not only do people still watch their shows live, they watch them with commercials fully intact.

Yup, that's what I dint get!

Gotta say, I liked how the season ended and i'm curious as to how they will proceed.
But man they dropped the ball on the cowboy. Can't even call him the saint.
