We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
It's pretty shocking. As shocking as the fact that the Supreme Court a year ago repealed what was basically the most important part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Southern states are now free to limit access to voting stations by requiring specific types of ID and to gerrymander districts in a way that invalidates minority votes.

What's shocking to you is not all that surprising to me.

There was a news story a week ago about one of the candidates who pushed for voter IDs forgetting his own voter ID at home:
http://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/asa- ... to-id-vote - Pro-voter ID candidate Asa Hutchinson forgets ID needed to vote

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
He said it was a "little bit of an inconvenience." He sent a staffer to retrieve it. It seems like he should have gone to retrieve it himself. it's not like Joe and Jane Voter can send staff after their IDs.
Also, it just seems weird to me that a person can even get around without an ID. My wallet goes with me everywhere. I guess I wouldn't really *need* to have my wallet on me if I had drivers to drive me and staffers to pay for my meals. I guess if I were a well-known public figure I also wouldn't have to worry about proving my identity.
Man. This guy and I do not live similar lives.

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
Dalty, in many districts in America, especially urban ones, we already have "de facto" segregation, which means although it's not mandated by law, the effect of white flight means most minority students go to schools that are 90+% their race. The district in the article is not asking for "de jure" (by law) segregation, they are asking for an end to court monitoring that has been in place since the 1970s to counter the de jure segregation of the Jim Crow era. The result will be de facto segregation.Bananarama's Bouncy Bits wrote:Wait wait wait wait...... are you seriously telling me that people are officially proposing a return to black schools for black kids and white schools for white kids? I mean OFFICIALLY??
People talk about the South when it comes to school segregation, but in reality it is huge northern cities like Chicago which are the worst for this kind of economic-racial de facto segregation. I could go on, but I've already written a book about the Brown decision and it's aftermath. Someone contacted me last week to see if I would go on TV to talk about it, and of course I said no way.

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
I think I remember you saying you wrote that book a long time ago. Would have been sucky having to make a quick and deep study of your own book on short notice.
St. Louis is famously segregated. Have a look at this race distribution map. The green dots represent African-American distribution, the blue dots represent Caucasian distribution, and the red dots represent Asian distribution.
I was surprised by this one tiny little blue square in a sea of green until I looked up the location on a map and discovered it was the Ranken Technical College.

Ok, my ignorance again. Why is it bad to ask people to take ID with them to prove who they are when they vote?

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
The general argument against it is that it amounts to a "poll tax," since it costs money to acquire an adequate ID.
Unlike you Europeans, we are not necessarily required to have a photo ID. Most people do, in that most people have driver's licenses.

Good point. In the UK we aren't required to carry photo ID either but, as you say, many have driving licences or access to a passport.

Wasn't sure how it was in the UK. In Germany, you are required to have your state-issued ID with you.

I posted about this in the "Not Alabama This Time" thread because it didn't happen in Alabama, but I considered posting it here. I know people who know him.

People put themselves before their children all the time.
I'm not sure this guy's actions were criminal and/or would only be found in the south.

Re: Alabama, Ladies and Gentlemen!
In one of the comment sections, someone pointed out that a father had left his child in a car for hours in some northern state. It was in winter time, and the kid's core temperature was pretty low, but the kid survived. I can't remember whether or not the father was charged with negligence, but I don't think he was. I think this might be the story they were talking about.

Leeds Mayor Upset over Billboard's Message
Here's the billboard that upset him:
Good on you, Mayor of Leeds.
The article claims that a webite called whiterabbitradio.net promotes the message on the billboard but does not know who funded the billboard. The site's founder had this to say:
"The point of the message is when white people are called racist to give them something to say, something to say to defend themselves so they don't just sit silently keep getting beaten over the head over and over again. You know everyone has come to the conclusion that racism is only in white countries, only in white people's churches, houses and businesses, and white people are generally the only ones who face this charge generally on behalf of white anti-whites as well."
Some people, man. Sheesh.

That guy does not speak for all Christians, and it would be foolish to think that he did.
