Guardians of the Galaxy

We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

I might pick up some of the comic stuff after the movie.
I too enjoyed "Deaths Head II" (never read the original).

Due to a mix up I read the latest issue of the comic based on the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon, it featured the Guardians. I'd take a closer look at it but I'm upset that marvel's idiotic renaming of titles has messed up my comic supply once again.

I meant to share this the other day, but I forgot. Gunn confirms that Groot's only line (spoken a number of times, natch) is "I am Groot!" He also says that Diesel has a knack for getting a lot out of it.

Unless It's the fourth in the series. Then it gets a lame callback and becomes all about the "years."

Drew McWeeny posted this Rolling Stone-like Chris Pratt interview piece earlier in the day. It's a decent read.

Here are some early screening reactions to it. Almost all the reactions are overwhelmingly positive. (There's one that could be read a number of ways. From Kristopher Tapley: "...It's better than Thor 2 and Iron Man 2?") Granted, the critics who get invited to these kinds of early screenings tend to be the intended audience, and the ones who feel compelled to post about it afterward tend to be the ones who liked it and are caught up in the moment. Such folk are prone to hyperbole and easier to please than Joe Moviegoer and the (non nerd site) critics. It should also be pointed out that people at ComicBookMovie.com did the reaction aggregating. They were among those who responded positively to it. I don't know if this would influence them to choose only to share the positive responses, but I guess it's a possibility.

There's an embargo, so people can't go too far beyond saying whether they liked it or disliked it. I see some familiar names among the Tweeters. Mr. Beaks posted about it, as did Devin Faraci, SlashFilm's Germain Lussier, and some writers for HitFix, Collider, and ComicBookMovie.com.

I am trying to decide if I am interested in this. I don't know much about the source material despite being a big Marvel fan. It looks pretty fun in a wacky kind of way. My only concern is tying it into the greater Marvel universe that Disney is doing.

What do you reckon this is going to do at the Box Office?

Tracking suggests it will make somewhere between $65 million and $70 million in the US on its opening weekend. This could mean a final domestic box office in the $200 million range. It might be a little lower than that, though, considering that it's an August release. On the other hand, people know it's connected to the MCU, so it has that going for it. The August release and MCU connection might cancel one another out.

The recent trend for Marvel movies (whether Disney, Sony, or Fox) is to make just under or just over double their US domestic take overseas. If it makes $200 million in the US, it's likely to make somewhere between $375 and $415 million overseas. (Amazing Spider-Man 2 made 2.5 times more overseas, but it features a long-established character who is beloved outside the US.)

It has positive early word of mouth going for it. It also has a 99% "want to see" rating among Rotten Tomatoes users.

My guess is that it will make somewhere in the neighborhood of $600 million worldwide. I wouldn't be surprised if it made as low as $500 million or as high as $700 million.

Again, this all depends on the first weekend. I'll have a more educated guess after the first weekend. I'll have an even more educated guess after the second weekend. It doesn't have too much competition. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could cut into its second weekend box office. Honestly, I don't see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being that big a hit. Tracking for it hasn't been all that great, either. Guardians has a decent shot at beating the Turtles box office if it doesn't have too big a drop-off. Expendables 3 will be its big third weekend competition. It has a chance to at being Expendables 3 that weekend, too. I guess we'll see.
