We once roamed the vast forums of Corona Coming Attractions. Some of us had been around from The Before Times, in the Days of Excelsior, while others of us had only recently begun our trek. When our home became filled with much evil, including the villainous Cannot-Post-in-This-Browser and the dreaded Cannot-Log-In, we flounced away most huffily to this new home away from home. We follow the flag of Jubboiter and talk about movies, life, the universe, and everything, often in a most vulgar fashion. All are welcome here, so long as they do not take offense to our particular idiom.

She needs to say to her constituents; "me velly solly; me rikey rikey honourable Chinamen."
That would be my political advice.

He did, but then he realized he'd end up as a diplomatic corpse.

Re: Space News
Actually, I seriously did, for awhile. Figured it was a good use for a history & poli-sci BA. Travelling to exotic locales; living it up on taxpayer funded junkets; countless affairs with beautiful foreign women, all while bringing peace and hope to the troubled hotspots of the world.Dalty wrote:Spacey, have you ever considered a career in the diplomatic corps?
I mean, that is the life of an actual diplomat, no?

Re: Space News
Oh, and New Horizons. Very cool. It just reaffirms my view that space exploration is one of the last areas in life consistently providing us with good news.

What amazes me is just how wrong we were about a number of things right here in our own solar system.

And that's just our own teeny tiny corner of the Cosmos.
But equally amazing are the predictions that have turned out to be more or less accurate--such as Europa's ocean. Predicted 30 years ago, and now all but a certainty.

Re: Space News
I certainly think it's possible. But at the same time I almost hope there is no life there--simply because I shudder to think about what Mankind would do to it, in time.
Actually, it gives me an idea for a science fiction story....

Re: Space News
Speaking of which... looks like the Euros are headed for Europa, and the rest of the Jovian moons, including an orbital survey of Ganymede. Fitting, that.

The US had a similar proposed mission in the works last decade, the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter or JIMO. JIMO would have been a seriously ambitious project, a nuclear-powered ion drive space probe that would have revolutionized deep space exploration.
The ESA craft, named JUICE (not making that up) is rather more conventional, but will be no less impressive.

Spacey, can I recommend to you "The Infinite Monkey Cage" podcast from the BBC? The recent U.S. tour ones would be a good starter.

Big announcement tomorrow about Mars. Water? Ocean? Ancient life? Current life? Nude Barsoomian princesses?

Nah, I think this is related to planetary science findings. Call it intuition.

Re: Space News
Actually, the more I think about, the more I don't fully believe that finding water--awesome though that would be--would warrant quite this much hoopla. After all, we've found evidence of liquid water on the moons of Jupiter, Saturn, even an asteroid.
I'm starting to think this announcement could be the big one. Verification of alien life, past or present.

Re: Space News
It's some anticlimactic bullshit/nonevent. That's all it ever is.
Every time NASA has a "huge announcement," people get really excited, and they let their imaginations run wild. The actual announcement tends to be a big disappointment. They pulled this back in March with Ganymede and its probable ocean. Then it was Kepler-452b in July.

Yeah, but if we could find some water in some place where we don't have to haul it into orbit..... ?Space Tycoon wrote:Actually, the more I think about, the more I don't fully believe that finding water--awesome though that would be--would warrant quite this much hoopla. Well, in fairness, those were fairly important discoveries. The Swollen Goiter of God wrote:It's some anticlimactic bullshit/nonevent. That's all it ever is.

Honestly, I'll be quite content with the verification of Martian liquid water. I'm not greedy. I'll take what I can get.
